Ten Filipino villagers were nailed on wooden crosses on 29th March 2024 in Fillipi to reenact Jesus’s crucifixion. Among the 10 men, one carpenter known by the name Ruben Enaje, a 63-year-old man, is reported he sacrificed himself in favour of Ukraine and Gaza about the ongoing war.

An international media outlet reported that Friday’s sacrifice was the 35th time Enaje offered himself as a living sacrifice to be crucified on Good Friday as a way of reenacting the biblical Jesus Christ’s crucifixion.

During the crucifixion, over 100 netizens in San Pedro Cutud, north of Manila, Fillipi, witnessed the ritual performed on 10 devotees as they endured painful body injuries on the wooden crosses.

It’s reported the 63-year-old Enaje is a lover of peace and despite his age, he offered himself as a sacrifice so that God may restore peace in Ukraine and Gaza.

“If these wars worsen and spread, more people, especially the young and old, would be affected. These are innocent people who have totally nothing to do with these wars,” Enaje said.

The ritual which had ceased for three years because of the coronavirus, resumed in 2024 when netizens approached Enaje whether he would offer his body for the ritual and alleged his age was the limit but when requested, he said there would be no way he would bow out to the request.

“Because my body is getting weaker, I can’t tell … if there will be a next one or if this is the final time,” Enaje said.

Enaje started the ritual of offering his body for crucifixion in 1980 where he jumped from a three-storey building and fell to the ground as thanksgiving for what he considered a miracle.

After sustaining fierce injuries, he survived death by a whisker and sought another alternative to express his love for God. It’s also alleged his sacrifices have restored health to most of the family members at the time they were about to die.
