Spain Approves Law Granting Women With Menstrual Pain Paid Medical Leave

Spanish lawmakers on Thursday approved a bill in parliament granting women suffering from severe menstrual pain a paid medical leave.

 

In history, Spain joined Japan, Zambia and Indonesia in recognizing women’s pain they usually go through during their periods.

 

The law which however doesn’t show the number of days a woman under paid menstrual would be taking, it highlights the granting of women a medical leave where a woman applies and get approved by a professional medical practitioner.

 

In parliament, the law was passed by a whoop of 185 votes against the opposers, 154. In European continent, Spain becomes the first country to grant women suffering from severe menstrual pain a paid medical leave.

 

Ahead of the voting day, Spanish Equality Minister, Irene Montero took to her Twitter account to celebrate the awaiting big day in European continent history.

 

It is a historic day for feminist progress” said Equality Minister Irene Montero.

 

According to Spanish Gynaecology and Obstetrics Society, one third of women in Spain suffer from severe menstrual pain.

 

After passing the bill, now the opposition side, private companies and some labour activists have taken to social media criticizing the law that it undermines a girl child in the society where, many companies will be employing men rather than women.

 

They claim most women will be rendered redundant at their work place because of poor service delivery and unnecessary leaves from work place. Others claim many will faint sickness.

 

Besides that, the passed bill allows minors aged 16- 17 to abort without parental permission. In 1985, Spanish government decriminalized abortion and in 2010, reviewed it and allowed women to abort the pregnancy during the first 14 weeks.
