Equity Bank Comes Clean on Charging Bank-MPESA Transactions Despite Court Order

A twitter user by the name ‘Kawangware Finest ™ (Geoffrey Moturi)’ , took to her twitter account asking netizens to mention a bank charging Bank- MPESA transactions despite court orders.

‘Name the bank that has refused to stop charging Bank-Mpesa transaction fees, despite a court order suspending these fees,’ she posed

Netizens who have used the service in the past few weeks  were quick to mention Equity Bank Kenya among others which they feel defy the already issued court orders

‘Equity Bank just charged me ksh 11 to transfer 500 to mpesa,’ UKenyatta Retired President of Kenya noted

The bank in its defense noted waiting for a communication from CBK on the matter.
‘Hello, we trust you’re well. We are waiting for CBK communication on the subject matter as directed by court. Thank you,’ the bank gave its reply to all netizens who had mentioned it.

This didn’t go well with some Netizens who took on the bank for their response
‘The court order according to equity et Al has to be validated by CBK otherwise it’s null and void. Welcome to magical Kenya…’ Boaz Sitati said.
‘You wait for CBK Kenya or obey the court order?’ terernicholas82 posed.
Remember, in December 2022, the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) announced the return of charges on transactions between mobile money and bank accounts starting January 1, 2023. Kenyans protested this move as some noted missing the free bank-Mpesa transaction if this was to be implemented.
However, the High Court recently ordered Safaricom and the Central Bank of Kenya to suspend the reintroduction of bank-to-MPesa charges pending the determination of a suit involving financial consumer rights. As it seems, most banks are yet to comply with this order.
