Millions Eliud Kipchoge And Company Are Competing For At Tokyo Marathon This Sunday

Former World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge will be on the road this weekend in Tokyo marathon in quest to try and set a new world record for the marathon after his previous world record was broken by the late Kelvin Kiptum.

Kipchoge will be participating in this year’s Tokyo marathon on 3rd March as he gears up for the 2024 Paris Olympics scheduled for July 26th to 11th August, 2024. The Greatest marathoner will be in contention for the gold medal as well as setting new world record to kick off his year with a resounding win.

Apart from winning the gold, silver and bronze medals for top three performers, they will also earn some good money for their success. With the Tokyo marathon being one of the most lucrative marathons across the globe, the top performers will be smiling all the way to the bank. According to the event organizers, the prize money will remain unchanged, and it will be just like the last year’s package.

The last year’s winners got $80,000 (Ksh. 11.6 million) for the 1st Place with the 2nd Place bagged$40,000 (Ksh. 5.8 million), 3rd Place walked away with $25,000 (Ksh. 3.6 million) while 4th Place took home $18,000 (Ksh. 2.6 million). Just like last year, the winners for both male and female will receive the same amount of money and in case of record breaking, there will be a bonus in excess of Ksh. 2 million.

Kipchoge has only won the Tokyo marathon once in 2021 and he will be looking forward to win it for the second time as he winds up his marathon career. He is the record holder for the marathon as he clocked 2:02:40 with his fellow Kenyan Bridgid Kosgei being the defending champion in the women’s race as she clocked 2:16:02 to win it.
