Karua To Raila:Declare March 20 Public Holiday
Narc Kenya Party leader and Azimio Running mate in the August polls Martha Karua has urged Azimio leader Raila Odinga to declare March 20 a public holiday so as to allow their supporters to freely participate in the planned mass action.
“March 20 is our day and I ask that Baba to declare that day a public holiday. We cannot demonstrate demanding for right and go to work,” she said.
Although he wants Hon. Raila to do this as People’s President, her request is contrary to Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act which vests the power to declare public holidays to Interior CS.
“The minister may at any time if he thinks fit, by notice in the Gazette, declare any day to be a public holiday either in addition to the days mentioned in the Schedule or in substitution for any of those days,” Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act states.
The set mass action came after the expiry of 14-day ultimatum where Azimio leaders wanted the current regime to deal with many demands among them lower the cost of living in the country.
It was later postponed to 20 March following a briefing by Hon. Raila.
