Residents of Ssemuto, Nakaseke District were left devastated after a policeman shot and killed one Fred Waiswa.

It is reported that the issue that led to the unfortunate events stemmed from a resident who they say got possessed by a spirit and confessed to having murdered one of their own. The residents ganged up and as they were beating him up, police intervened and whisked him away. It was after the incident that this policeman shot and killed the 33 year old Fred who worked at a supermarket nearby.

Residents blame the act on policemen who are constantly in bars drinking alcohol and end up misusing their weapons. They also called upon the government to help train their armed forces on how to handle weapons especially around civilians.

“If they continue giving such people guns, it will not resolve anything. Because we were minding our business with no chaos but our friend ended up being shot.” A witness said.

Eyewitnesses confirm that the deceased was very far from the chaos and it took an untrained policeman to shoot a person who was not at the scene of the crime.

“How do you come among unarmed civilians with a loaded gun trying to catch a suspect? We were not even striking but he chose to shoot aimlessly at a person who was not even close to the chaos.” A second witness questioned.

Savannah Region spokesperson Patrick Lule in a phone interview acknowledged the shooting. He noted that a murder case against their policeman had already been filed and investigations would commence with immediate effect.
