Shopkeeper Offering Two Free Beers On Purchase Of Smartphone Arrested

Just like the China Square that has trended for a couple of days after some hullabaloo from the government to be shut down, another Kenyan has set up his China Square at Kamukunji in Nairobi.

 

Now, as he carry out his daily business in an open air hustle, customers are now amazed by his hustle and have started going there. It’s called creative public relation mind.

 

In India, a man named Rajesh Maurya has landed himself in a police custody after violating the advertising standards of India’s code of conduct.

 

Mr Maurya a businessman selling electronics based in Bhadohi District, was on Monday arrested by the Kotwali Police for promoting his business with two bottles of beer.

 

Maurya printed posters and leaflets saying ; “buy a mobile phone, get two beer cans for free” and distributed around the villages and town near his shop at Uttar Pradesh that saw many customers coming for the offer.

 

According to the report from India’s News Agency, Maurya’s advert amassed many customers till could fight for the offer.

 

This attracted the attention of the police that came, investigated, chased customers, closed the shop and arrested Maurya for violating the Advertising Standards Council of India’s Code of Conduct(ASCI).

 

According to Kotwali Police superintendent Mr. Anil Kumar, Maurya was arrested under section 151 of India’s constitution ( disturbing public peace of the Indian Penal Code).

 

Making posters of offering alcohol as a business promotion is illegal in India according to licensing guidelines and regulations. However, Maurya’s poster making and even, putting on his shop was illegal attention seeking.

 

Moreover, selling alcohol to persons under 21 years is illegal in India. According to the News Agency report, many customers who flocked at Maurya’s shop to buy the Android smartphones, many were under 30 but a huge section’s age ranged between 17- 25 years.

 

Maurya is now in police custody at Kotwali Police Station waiting for charges as his shop remain closed.
