The government on Friday 3rd February 2023 disbursed Ksh. 2.7 billion for university loans and bursaries set to benefit 180, 000 students.

“The ministry of education is aware that the majority of government sponsored students in our public and private universities are preparing to sit their examinations for the 2022/2023 academic calendar,” read a press statement from Cabinet Secretary of Education Ezekiel Machogu.

“To enable the affected students to be registered with their respective universities ahead of the examinations, I wish to announce that the National Treasury and Economic Planning has released funds for student loans and bursaries for 180,000  legible students. The funds have been sent to the Higher Education Loans Board for further disbursement to legible students,” Machogu added.

This is a relief for thousands of students who have been clamoring for the disbursement while calling for President William Ruto to intervene.

CS Machogu has directed universities to allow students who are beneficiaries of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans to sit for their end-of-semester examinations without interruption.

“Further, I direct all universities to ensure that all beneficiaries of government loans and bursaries are given the opportunity to sit their end-of-semester examinations as scheduled,” the CS stated.

Delayed payment of the loans is said to be causing students mental health issues due to pending school fee balances, inadequate housing, and insecurity within universities across the country.
