China’s media outlet reported that Li, the young woman, was also shocked to see her phone connecting to the unfamiliar hotel Wi-Fi, yet she had never visited the place.
It is reported that Li was also accused by her friends of being unfaithful to her boyfriend. However, in her thorough research, she discovered the hotel’s Wi-Fi name and password resembled one at the place she had previously worked at in the same Chongqing region.
Besides her discovery, she approached a tech expert from Chongqing TV to help her verify her claim and get facts. The journalist visited the two places: Li’s first place of work and the hotel, and discovered that the Wi-Fi details matched.

The cybersecurity expert on the TV also commented that most phones auto-connect to Wi-Fi networks with identical names and passwords if saved credentials match. However, he advised users of public Wi-Fi to always disable auto-connect features to avoid confusion like Li’s story.
