100 Rats Get Jobs Abroad After Passing Training Tests

The government of Tanzania has sent 100 rats to other countries for job opportunities after they passed training tests.
Prof. Adolf Mkenda, through APOPO, a nonprofit rat training organisation based in the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Tanzania, said 1oo rats passed training tests and were sent to some countries within the African continent and others overseas for work.
Prof. Mkenda revealed that 13 rats were taken to Angola, 11 to Azerbaijan, Cambodia 58 and 6 to Ethiopia for the identification of landmines and the identification of Tuberculosis parasites.

The renowned academician added that 12 rats were taken to the United States of America as tourist attractions on an animal farm.
“The implementation of the project has continued to build a reputation and promote Tanzania internationally, where a Tanzanian mouse known as Ronin has broken the world record by identifying 109 bombs planted on the ground in Cambodia, breaking the record of the Tanzanian mouse Magawa, who identified 71 bombs isolated on the ground,” Prof. Mkenda shared.
APOPO(in Dutch, Anti-Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling or Anti-Personnel Landmines Detection Product Development ), a nonprofit organisation dealing with the rearing of pests and rats, was founded over two decades ago in Tanzania and has always been capturing and training rats to detect landmines and tuberculosis parasites.

Most of the African giant rats captured and trained by APOPO are believed to live up to a decade, while normal ones typically live to a maximum of four years.
