A Makerere University don Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe disclosed this at the campus premises on Tuesday during the 12th award ceremony for the best-performing business management student.

“Contrary to popular belief, these students did not drop out due to lack of funds. They had the necessary fees but chose to gamble in the hopes of making a profit,” Prof Nawangwe stated.

Further, the don said their research also found out that another section of students after losing their fees to sports betting companies, always go to the extent of inviting their parents to graduation yet they never school.

So many of them of course end up losing it and they start telling their parents stories; others even invite their parents on graduation day when their names are not on the graduation list.

According to the elite, most parents when attending most graduation ceremonies, never bother to enquire more about the transcripts and graduation booklets because of the deceit of their parents.

In a notable incident from May 2023, a Makerere University student self-abducted after squandering his tuition fees on sports betting.

Augustine Ssekajugo, a second-year Dental Surgery student, disappeared from his rented accommodation on campus and sought refuge in another secret place.

After an extensive search by the police, he was apprehended from his hideout and set for discipline.
