In an interview with Radio 47, Mariga revealed how he used to earn during Nyamweya’s tenure when got called for national duty with Harambee Stars. A local-based player used to earn Ksh. 5,000 a day while a foreign-based player would earn Ksh. 8,000- Ksh. 9,000 daily in the training camp. He went on to reveal that Harambee stars players currently earn Ksh. 750 daily regardless of their locations which is way lower than they used to earn 10 years ago.

“Nick Mwendwa’s leadership  is different because I played during both regimes. I think that there has been a big difference in terms of financial accountability as well as looking after welfare of Harambee Stars players.

His term in leadership has not been good more so to players and for me he has been getting things wrong in terms of football, I don’t know about other things but based on the things I see, he is not doing well.”  Mariga said.

For example, when I was playing for Harambee Stars, I used to earn Ksh. 5000 a day. “Infact, that amount was given to local based players. I had my own special amount for being a foreign based player. I earned around Ksh. 8000 to Ksh. 9000. The reason was foreign based players earned more was because local based players would stay in camp for 3 weeks to one month.” Mariga told Radio 47.

In his revelation, Mariga jokingly claimed that Harambee Stars players currently earn as little as Ksh. 750 a day saying his young brother Victor Wanyama told him about the same. “Now, all players, regardless of whether they are local or foreign, they get same the same package, which is Ksh. 740 or Ksh. 750. Even Wanyama he earned that.”
