Ivory Coast players can smile all the way to the bank as their president Alassane Ouattara rewarded them for the job well done after winning the African Cup of Nations trophy in their home soil on Sunday 11th February.
The Elephants nearly exited the tournament at the Group stage after winning only one match that was their opener fixture against Guinea Bissau followed by two defeats a 1-0 defeat from Nigeria and then their heaviest defeat in AFCON’s history where they suffered a loss 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea in front of home fans. Luckily, they proceeded to the round of 16 as best third position where they fought into the Finals.

Ivory Coast took on the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the 34th AFCON edition in a heated Final where Nigeria had a 1-0 advantage at the break, through their captain’s Troost-Ekong’s powerful header. Côte d’Ivoire staged a comeback with Frank Kessie’s headed a corner from Brighton Albion’s winger Adingra to level the score in the 62nd minute before Sebastian Haller netting the winning goal for the hosts 9 minutes before fulltime sealing one of their historical wins ever making them the African Champions for the third time.
Following their AFCON huge victory, Ivory Coast president Alassane Dramane Ouattara met all the players and coaching staff who represented the nation, in the just concluded AFCON tournament and rewarded them handsomely for making the nation proud. President Ouattara awarded each player a package of €76,000 converted into Kenya shillings 12.6 million while head coach Emerse Fae was awarded €150,000 converted into Kenya shillings is 25 million and top of each player and the coach will also receive a residential villa worth the same value.
