The football World has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden passing on of Panama striker of Luis Tejada. The Panama’s legendary forward met his death during a pick-up game in his hometown of San Miguelito in Panama. According to several media outlets, the Panama striker passed away over a suspected heart attack moments after he was subbed off during a friendly match.

Luis Tejada was in action over the weekend for a legends’ team when he felt unwell mid game and asked to be subbed off. Upon his substitution, the Panama’s all-time top scorer striker collapsed before he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.Doctors attempt to save his life unfortunately bore no fruits.Before meeting his tragic death, Luis Tejada helped Panama national team qualify for the World cup for the first time in their history. At the age of 36, Tejada was named in Panama’s 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Panama’s first World cup stint did not go as they expected since they lost all their group stage matches. They lost 6-1 to England, 3-0 to Belgium and 2-1 to Tunisia finishing last in their Group G. Luis Tejada made 108 appearances throughout his career for Panama and scored 43 goals becoming Panama’s All-time top scorer.

The Panama legend has passed on at the age of 41. A statement issued by the Panama Football Federation read, “Historic goal scorer for the Panamanian national team, a decisive factor in qualifying for our first World Cup in 2018 and a synonym for the development and advancement of football in our country”

“We extend our sincerest condolences to his family and the entire Panamanian football and sports family in general,” the Federation added.
