Oscar Pistorius repeatedly said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired

Former South African Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius is set to be released on parole today (Friday) after spending nearly 9 years in prison for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on a Valentine’s Day in 2013.

 

Pistorius ,who is a double amputee, commonly referred to as “Blade Runner” for his carbon-fibre prosthetic legs, shot his 29-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp through a locked bathroom door on Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2013, an act that ruined the superstar’s sports reputation.

He repeatedly said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four shots into the bathroom at his Pretoria home.

 

The star has made several appeals against his murder case labelled on him.

The athlete who turned 37, has spent almost 8 and half years in prison as well as 7 months under home arrest for a period in 2015-2016 at his uncle’s mansion in the upscale Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof.

 

He lived there during his murder trial before he was sentenced for murder.

A parole board in November last year decided Pistorius be freed after he applied for it for the second time.

 

Pistorius has completed more than half of his sentence and he will be transported to department of corrections officials before being officially released.

 

In a statement shared by the Steenkamp family lawyer on Friday, Reeva Steenkamp’s mother June said: “There can never be justice if your loved one is never coming back, and no amount of time served will bring Reeva back, “We, who remain behind, are the ones serving a life sentence”.

 

June Steenkamp added that her only desire was to be allowed to live in peace after Pistorius’s release on parole.
