Karibu Kanairo: Mathias Momanyi Yet To Forget The Day Nairobi Thief Snatched His Phone

Mathias Momanyi said he still recalls his expensive phone/ courtesy.
Mathias Momanyi, a KBC radio presenter, revealed that he has yet to forget the day his expensive phone was snatched by a Nairobi thief.
Speaking to Billy Miya on Maskani 47, the journalist said he lost his phone to a thief in 2003 along Global Cinema in Nairobi.
Mathias Momanyi shared that he was walking along the street with his modern phone, Siemens, when an unidentified thief snatched it through the matatu window and ran away.

Unexpectedly, the people he thought would help him contact the thief and repossess the phone laughed at him as they pretended to help him hunt the phone snatcher.
According to Momanyi, he later discovered that the people who were pretending to help him get the snatcher were associated with the phone snatcher.
“Nikiingia hili jiji sikujua kwamba ni shamba la mawe. Nimeingia mjini na simu ya Siemens halafu wakati huo nilikuwa ninajishasha nina simu ya kitaa na ikija, mwanangu nilikuwa kijana wa kwanza wa mtaa kuwa nayo. Sasa acha nitembezwe mjini sehemu fulani hapo Global Cinema na sikujua wenyeji wanalijua jiji kuliko mie.

“Wakati huo nikitembea kindembwindembwi tu, najisikia nina simu yaani katika nchi, mji hamna mtu kama mimi. Acha simu iokotwe na wakati huo nilikuwa ninapiga na lazma watu wajue nilikuwa nikipiga…
“Namna ilivyookotwa kwanza sielewi halafu ninajaribu kupiga kelele, watu wananicheka badala ya kulia nami. Mimi najikuta ninajifanyia visanga tu na watu wananicheka. .. halafu acha nikimbie mbio ile 10o mtrs kumkimbiza. La kushangaza, jamaa wanaonisaidia kumkimbiza ni wenzake bro…” Momanyi narrated.
The journalist said he was hurt after he lost the phone, and it took him almost 6 months to get another phone and replace the lost SIM card.

However, Momanyi stated that the incident taught him many things about Nairobi, having its people doing unexpected hustles to make a living.
“Mwanangu, wezi wana mbio kuliko watu wa 100 mtrs. Hili jiji kuna watu wanajua kukimbia kuliko Omanyala…tukio la siku hiyo lilinikumbusha hili ni shamba la mawe…pia, nishajua wale wanaokimbia mji siyo wote wasaka tonge, wengine wanatafuta tu kwenye dirisha.” He added.
