First Year Student Found Lifeless On Tree In University Farm
Jonah Kiplangat, a 19-year-old University of Nairobi student, was discovered lifeless in Kabete, Nairobi County, in what authorities are investigating as a suspected suicide.
Kiplangat, who lived alone in the university hostels, was found hanging from a tree on the university farm.
Police have reported the recovery of a suicide note written in Kiplangat’s dialect, bidding farewell to his parents and clan.

However, investigators are working to verify the authenticity of the note as part of the ongoing probe into this tragic incident.
The victim’s body had no visible injuries other than marks around the neck.
The police have moved the deceased to the mortuary for an autopsy and additional investigative procedures.
Kenya is ranked 114th out of 175 countries in the World Population Review, showing a significant global challenge in addressing suicide cases.

According to World Bank data from 2022, suicide rates in Kenya are alarming, with six out of every 100,000 Kenyans taking their own lives.
Men in particular, face a higher risk accounting for nine out of 100,000 cases.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) emphasizes the severity of the global suicide crisis, revealing that over 700,000 people succumb to suicide annually. Shockingly, suicide ranks as the fourth leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29 years old.
WHO further notes that 77% of global suicides occur in low and middle-income countries, where methods such as pesticide ingestion, hanging, and firearms are unfortunately prevalent.
This tragic death serves as a reminder of the urgent need for mental health awareness, support, and intervention, both on campus and within the society.
