Kenya Railways Raise Fares Over High Fuel Prices

Kenya Railways has hiked  fares for Standard Gauge Railway users following the rise of petroleum prices.

 

Nairobi – Mombasa train users will now have to pay Ksh 4,500 for 1st class users as economy class users will pay a whooping  Ksh 1,500.

 

According to the statement, railway services for: Madaraka Express Passenger, Madaraka Express Commuter service, Nairobi Commuter Rail Services, Kisumu safari train and Nanyuki safari train users; will have to comply with the changes.

 

This increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations” the statement reads in part.

 

The hike sees a rise of 50% fare where previously, train fare from Nairobi to Mombasa settled at Ksh 3000 for 1st class and Ksh 100 for economy class as Nairobi to Suswa, settling at Ksh 250 from Ksh 200.

 

Children between 3-11 years traveling with adults will pay half of the adult fare according to the statement as those 11 years pay full fare.

The adjustments which will be effective starting 1st Jan, 2024; Madaraka Express Passenger service have been notified of making advance purchases of tickets within 60 days of the statement of release.
