Kenya Tissue and Transplant Authority(KTTA) has urged Kenyans to embrace organ donation to save lives.

While speaking on Tuesday  at the Kenyatta National Hospital where medics marked World Transplant Day, KTTA Deputy Chief Executive Officer Umuro Mamo said that the act is so crucial in saving many lives lost due to failure of various organs.

“One organ donor can save up to eight lives while a single tissue donor can save and enhance up to 75 lives,” Umuro said

He also noted that the act allows others to be heroes in other people’s lives.

The theme for this years World Transplant Day (WTD) was Hope for Tomorrow: Transforming Lives through organ donation.

Kenya’s government has also taken bold steps to revolutionize organ donation and transplantation services urging citizens to consider organ donation while stating that; “By becoming donors, we hold the power to save lives and bring hope to those in need.”

First successful Kidney transplant in Kenya was done in 1978 and since then, over 1000 successful transplants have been done.
