Family Dump Body Of Kin Outside Commissioner’s Office

Some of the displaced people camping outside the RDC’s office

The Resident District Commissioner of Kikuube District was left stranded after a dead body was dumped outside his office after relatives ran out of land to bury her.

Specioza Bagashekyi died in an accident over the weekend and when the locals retrieved the body from the road, they took it at Buhimba Town Council where it has spent days.

The 85-year-old woman is among the thousands of people that were displaced off their land in Bukinda, Kyangwali District. Currently the people are stranded with no land to cultivate or bury their loved ones, therefore left camping outside the RDC’s offices.

According to the RDC Amlan Tumusiime, since they moved, seven people had so far died and left the community stranded on where to take the dead bodies.

“A month ago, a kid died and we took two days suffering with the body and stuck on where to bury it. Until one person helped and gave us a small space to bury it. Now I’m stuck with the body of the old woman,” he said.

Tumusiime blames the Office of the Prime Minister who evicted over 60,000 people in 2013. They were allocated land in Kyeya Village with each family receiving 2.5 acres. They however rejected the land stating that it was not fertile and not good for agriculture, therefore demanding to be resettled back on their land.

“We do not have burial grounds or a district cemetery that is why we are getting stuck,” Tumusiime revealed.
