Barcelona Edge Closer To La Liga Title

Barcelona moved to within 3 points of the title after Jordi Alba struck late to give them a 1-0 win over Osasuna.

Osasuna played almost the entire game with 10 men after Jorge Herrando was sent off for a foul on Pedri after just 26 minutes. Osasuna goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez stood strong to deny efforts from Raphinha through a free-kick. Pedri, Ronald Araujo, and substitute Ousmane Dembele all missed opportunities, while Frenkie de Jong and Ansu Fati were all denied brilliantly.

Substitute Jordi Alba eventually struck the winner late in the game in the 86th minute to lift up the Camp Nou faithful with a much-needed victory and move them steps closer to the title.

After the game, Barcelona manager Xavi said his team deserved to win. “It’s the tone of the season; we’ve lacked effectiveness,” he said. “It’s a summary of the season, in which we’ve created a lot of chances but we haven’t put them away. But we played with hunger, and I think we deserved the win.” He said.

With five games left, the victory put Xavi’s team 14 points ahead of Real Madrid. Later on Tuesday, Carlo Ancelotti’s team suffered a 2-0 defeat at Real Sociedad; as a result, Barca will win the La Liga title if they defeat Espanyol on May 14.
