Home » Bodyguard Shoots Minister Dead

A bodyguard has today morning at around 8:00 AM shot and killed Uganda’s State Minister for Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Col (rtd) Charles Okello Engola at his home in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.

 

According to eyewitnesses, the UPDF soldier was then heard screaming in the neighborhood over non-payment as he opened fire and started shooting aimlessly along Kyanja Ring Road. It is said over 20 bullets have been fired before he also shot and killed himself in a nearby salon.

 

The news was confirmed by the Uganda police spokesperson, Enanga Fred in a press interview.

 

‘He was shot while entering his vehicle to go to work. The shooting was done by one of his bodyguards at his residence who allegedly fired several shots at close range and he fled from the scene up to the trading center at Kyanja Ring Road where he entered the salon and also shot himself dead,” Enanga said.

 

During the plenary session this morning, The Speaker of Parliament, Ms Anita Among, also confirmed the minister’s tragic passing.

 

“This morning, I received sad news that Hon Engola has been shot by his bodyguard and after, shot himself. May his soul rest in peace. That was God’s plan.  We can’t change anything,” Among said.

 

The body of the deceased minister is still at his home where he was assassinated from and the  crime scene has been secured by different heavy security personnel.

 

 Amongi Betty, the Gender Minister is among the government officials that arrived at the deceased’s home and confirmed the news.

 

“The guard said he hadn’t been paid Shs4m. He said he had a pregnant woman and his children were not going to school yet the minister’s kids were schooling,” an eyewitness said.
