Woman Nearly Killed By Sons For Stopping Construction Of A Shrine

Residents in Kayunga District were left in shock after a group of siblings tried to slay their mother for refusing them to build a shrine in their home compound.

The victim, 68-year-old Margret Namwano lost her husband, Clement Wepukhulu in 2006 with whom they bore 10 children. Her eldest son Masaba Richard championed the riot that saw her almost lynched for stopping the construction of the shrine, something that she said is contrary to her faith as a practicing Christian.

According to the children, their mother did not have a right to stop them from doing any activity at their home because they believed the property was willed to them by their father. The scuffle divided her children into two with the rest of the group supporting and protecting their mother from being killed.

“Our father died and left the house for our mother but her eldest sons have become a problem and want to kick her out and set up their shrine, My mother does not believe in whatever they want and I will forever fight for my mother,” Fred Wanditya, one of the sons, revealed.

Police together with the District’s representative that handles family affairs, Kafeero Collins quickly intervened in a meeting, Namwano vowed to do everything to stop the construction of the shrine because of her faith.

“I do not want to be a part of whatever they practice and I do not want it done in my house. I do not need such beliefs in my life because I am born again. My children want to kill me and kick me out,” Namwano cried out.

Masaba and his younger brother Henry Mungoma put up a huge fight, also insisting that the shrine must be erected because of their tradition that their late father also believed in. Just as the constriction was going on, police intervened and through dialogue, the children were advised to settle in the land that their father willed to them.

“Their mother is the owner of the home and she decides whatever she wants to happen to her land. Every child should go to their plots,”Kafeero revealed.

The two were arrested and taken to Kayunga Police where they will be charged for the attack on their mother, causing chaos and trying to steal their mother’s property.
