University Student Attempts Suicide Following Indefinite Suspension
A student at Makerere University, Kampala university has been admitted after a failed suicide attempt following a suspension.
Byaruhanga Isaac, a fourth year student of Medicine and Surgery at the university together with his colleague Muganga Arnold were suspended by the Vice Chancellor Professor Nanangwe Barnabas after they allegedly engaged in an unsanctioned guild presidential campaign dubbed ‘Kimeza’ which resulted into a violent physical clash leaving one student in seriously injured in hospital.
The suspension letter dated 6th April, 2023, the Vice Chancellor pointed out Byaruganga for particularly starting the fight that resulted in the severe injury of a fellow student identified as Sserunjoji Robert, a second year student from the College Of Natural Sciences.
Byaruhanga was left shocked by the allegations slapped against him as he claimed he was not part of the messy situation he was being accused of. He denied any participation in the physical fights that led to Sserunjonji being injured and revealed he is taking legal action against the University for the suspension that he says is affecting his mental health.
“This is disturbing my mental health, I do not feel fine right now, I’m not concentrating because I have so many issues that have been running in my life and when I have added up this one, I feel it is too much for me,” Byaruhanga revealed.
It should be remembered that physical campaigns were prohibited at Makerere University following the implementation of the new Students’ Guild statue in 2022, which specifically prohibits campaigning activities.
“Students elections at the university shall be virtual unless otherwise determined by the university.” Reads Article 10 (b) of the statue.
Among other people that were interdicted was Dhubanji Xavier, a custodian at Mitchell Hall for being absent from his duty post without permission from the chief security officer at the time the events happened.
