Woman Falls Off Bridge, Drowns With Friend’s Baby
Fear gripped locals in Kiruruma, Rubanda District after one of their own was discovered dead on a riverbank with a friend’s baby.
The deceased were identified as Mugabirwe Immaculate, 35 and Ayebare Pretty who was just 14 months old. It is reported that at about 6:00 PM, the toddler’s mother Akantorana Shirah and her late friend decided to visit Nfasha Trading Centre for drinks at a local bar owned by a man identified as Ibrahim.
At about 10:00 PM, the tipsy friends made a decision to retire home but Akantorana stayed behind for some more fun, handing her baby to Mugabirwe promising to follow later.
It is said that when she reached home, both her friend and the baby were not at the house. This prompted a search with the help of the neighbours but it turned out fruitless. She was however hopeful that they would show up the next day but to the shock of many, their dead bodies were discovered floating at the river which is just a few meters from her home.
Locals suspect that Mugabirwe might have lost balance from the alcohol and as a result slid off the bridge and drowned with the baby who was still tied around her back.
Kigezi Police Spokesperson Elly Maate visited the scene and confirmed the unfortunate events. The dead bodies were retrieved and transported to Muko Health Center for postmortem.
