Baby Dies After Unsuccessful Circumcision Procedure
Police in Buvuma District are investigating mysterious circumstances under which a toddler died after a circumcision procedure went wrong.
The sad incident happened on Monday and according to eyewitnesses, a yet to be identified man visited the village and encouraged the uncircumcised Muslim children to come and have the procedure done for free. The one month and two weeks old deceased whose name has been withheld was among the babies that underwent the knife and unfortunately passed on hours later from a lot of bleeding.
Ssezibwa police spokesperson Butoto Helen confirmed the incident and revealed that the parents of the deceased, Jamal Marshall and wife refused to share any information or reveal the identity of the suspect to the authorities noting that he had previously circumcised one of the children and he made it out without any harm.
“However police are on ground to establish whether the suspect is a trained surgeon qualified to perform such a procedure,” Butoto revealed.
Nabuzaale Judith, a former councilor of Buyaga Sub County who reported the events to the police condemned the act. She encouraged people to always look out for qualified medical personnel to carry out such procedures and stay away from local circumcisers who she says are unhygienic leading to infections and over bleeding.
“We have Buyaga Health Center III, which offers circumcision services at no cost but many residents still go to traditional herbalists.” She said.
The suspect is currently on the run.
