A 31 year old man in Kayunga District was pronounced dead after he fell inside a pit latrine while trying to save his mobile phone.

It is reported that the deceased identified as Muyimba Idi was in the latrine when his phone accidentally slipped and fell in the pit. According to Sikaaka Gaali, an eye witness, Muyimba alerted them about his ordeal and they watched him go inside the toilet to retrieve it.

They say they waited for close to an hour for him to come out in vain. It was until they dug up the lower walls of the latrine that they discovered his lifeless boy in the waste. Residents tried to pull him out using ropes in vain.

Diana Nandawula, Busoga East police spokesperson encouraged residents to seek assistance from police under the fire and rescue department in case of such incidents because they have well equipped officers with skills needed to extract items or individuals from pit latrines. They should seek guidance before embarking on any rescue operations in such incidents.

The body of the deceased was transported to Bukatuube Health Centre III mortuary for postmortem before being handed over to his relatives for burial.
