Meet Residents Who have Never had Piped Water, Electricity

More than 1,000 residents of Kajajini Village in Malindi Constituency Kilifi county  have turned to fundraise to install a water pipeline that will enable them to drink fresh water for the first time Since independence.

Since independence, the villagers have never had piped water or electricity forcing them to stay in darkness and drink salty water from boreholes.

Grace kenga is just a young girl ,but since she was born she has never tested tap water, she tells me.

”I don’t know how tap tastes ,I have been drinking borehole water ”.

The village has frequently suffered several diseases when an outbreak knocks in, and many children have to an extent lost their lives.

The locals had however  collectively begun digging the trenches of the 500 meters long pipeline in the rocky area which they termed hard but could not afford to buy the pipes and the funds for installation.

They had to reach out to the Ganda Ward MCA Oscar Wanje who contributed 200 meters of pipes while the MP Amina Mnyazi bought the remaining 300 meters.

The residents showed Mnyazi the pipeline trench which had hard rocks and she assured them of their support until it was completed.

Celestine Kaingu, a resident here, says  they initiated the Water pipeline project due to the serious shortage of water in the area.

“This area has salty water which makes it difficult even for animals to drink at times. That’s why we came up with this project,” she said.

Kaingu thanked the area MP and the MCA for supporting their initiative but called on them to help them get the machines to crash the stones along the pipeline in the rocky area.

She said the area has no electricity which is a major security challenge even for children who wake up early to go to school.

“The crime rate in this area is high, so many insecurity issues have happened in our area due to lack of electricity so we appealed to the government together with the leadership to help us get electricity in our area,” she said.

Mitsanze Baya, a resident of Kajajini said they decided to initiate the water project because the locals have challenges accessing fresh water.

“We appeal for assistance to get huge storage tanks which can carry a capacity of 10,000 litres of water which can help us store water for a week once the project is complete,” he said.

Richard Ziro, a resident, called on the Governor of Kilifi Gideon Mung’aro to intervene too and help them get electricity.

“We need electricity in Kajajini working with the MP Amina Mnyazi. She has brought water pipes and we still need electricity here because we live in darkness,” he said.

The MP said she had brought 200 meters to add up with the 200 meters that had been donated by the MCA but since there was a remaining 100 meters left she gave Sh. 25,000 cash so as to resolve the issue conclusively.

“I do not want my people to suffer because of Lack of water, water is life and is very important for everyone,” she said.

She said the MCA had given her a list of all water projects in Ganda ward which will be implemented to ensure the locals have access to fresh water.

On the issue of electricitym she assured the residents that before the end of the year, they will be having electricity installed in their area.
