Western Kenya Leads Nationwide In Chang’aa Consumption
As the country try to fight the high cost of living especially maize flour, National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) report has ranked Western Kenya at the top in chang’aa consumption.
NACADA’s February report analysis ranks Western at the top with 11.4 percentage, Nyanza 6.5 percentage and Rift Valley comes third with 3.6 percentage in the consumption of Chang’aa as Central leads in potable spirits.
NACADA further reports that, in traditional liquor production and consumption nationwide, Western again leads by 12.9 percentage, Coast 7. 4 percentage and Nyanza 2.2 percentage.
In January, NACADA in partnership with the office of the president, William Ruto reported a stringent fight against alcoholism among the school going learners where the president urged the County Governments to seriously invest in the fight against drugs and substances abuse.
However, the report notes that Alcohol is the most abused drug in Kenya with a total of 3,199,119 of the population affected followed by Tobacco and Khat at 2,305,929 as Marijuana abuse affects 60,407 people across the country.
“The situation has been made worse due to the growing problem of drug abuse in our schools. The most abused drug in Kenya is alcohol followed by tobacco, khat, cannabis, prescription drugs, heroin and cocaine,” the report said.
At standby, at least one substance of drugs is abused in every region in Kenya whereby, Western again leads by 26.4 percentage followed by Nairobi 20.7 percentage.
