The Ministry of Health in Uganda is considering acquiring choppers to help transport road accident victims to hospitals for first aid.

 

The suggestion was raised during a meeting with Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), Uganda Revenue Authority (UNRA), Ministry of Works and Transport and other private organizations who in unison agreed that these choppers will help deal with the increasing number of road accidents.

 

 

Maria Nansasi, an expert from the Ministry of Health has revealed that they are already in talks to have the first two choppers acquired by the government.

 

 

We would like five choppers. These will not be going everywhere but places which are hard to access. We are in touch with the parties that are going to help us and the current plan is to get two choppers.” Maria said.

 

Every year, Uganda Police releases a report detailing the accidents that happened throughout the country and according to their statistics, more than 3000 people have died in road accidents with more than 12,000 getting injured.

 

Nansasi however, noted that the numbers revealed by the police are way lower than the statistics gathered by the Ministry because most victims choose not to have these cases reported.

 

 

“Looks like when some of our people get involved in accidents, they run away to avoid being held accountable and confronted by the police.” She said,
