Preparations To Fly Back Body Of Deceased Opposition Lawyer Underway

Anthony Wameli

Opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) led by Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine is in touch with the Ugandan Embassy in America to see that the body of fallen party lawyer Anthony Wameli is flown back to Uganda for a decent burial.

On Wednesday, Bobi Wine confirmed to the media that the prominent city lawyer, also head of NUP party legal department, had lost his battle to stomach cancer.

Around May, 2021, Wameli started getting complications in the stomach and was admitted at St. Anthony in Kasangati, Kampala to ascertain what the issues were. He was then flown to Boston, USA where he has been receiving medical attention since September.

‘In September 2021, he was flown to Boston where they diagnosed him with stomach cancer and he has since received treatment. It is sad we lost him.” NUP Spokesman, Joel Senyonyi told journalists.

According to Bobi Wine, Wameli was well taken care of and the bills were being catered for courtesy of the opposition diaspora team but his death leaves behind a huge hospital bill that needs to be cleared before the deceased can be brought back.

“It may take some time; like two weeks to see him brought back here and then look at the rest of the burial plans.” Ssenyonyi said.

Wameli was a highly respected lawyer who handled some high profile cases like former ADF rebel leader Jamiru Mukulu, Geofrey Kazinda, suspects implicated in the murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi and attempted murder of General Katumba Wamala  among others. He was also honored with an award from Uganda Law Society for his tremendous work.

“Good thing is he had trained some of us in different things and we are sure that we shall carry forward the work he had started. He was so kind hearted and fought for human rights.” Godfrey Turyamusiima, a lawyer and colleague said.

“He dedicated his career to fight for justice. He made sure many members of our party were released from jail before he got so sick.” Bobi Wine said.

Wameli served as Nakasongola grade one magistrate and also a pastor at Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya. He was also a founder and a managing partner for Wameli and Company Advocates.
