Ministry of Education to investigate poor performance and school dropouts of the girl child.

The First Lady of Uganda, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni has called for investigation on the increased poor performance among the girl child in National exams.

The 2022 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations were released a day ago and among 345,695 candidates that registered for last year’s sitting, only 171,934 were female. These made a percentage of 49.7%, a decrease in the number of girls sitting for the examinations compared to last year.

The first lady, who also doubles as the Minister for Education and Sports has expressed her concern about the 30,000 plus girls who do not make it to secondary school despite sitting for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

“We noted that not only had the number of girls completing PLE caught up with the number of boys but also the numbers of girls were significantly higher than that of the boys. Unfortunately in 2022, this positive trend appears to have reversed in favor of the boys once again.” Hon. Janet revealed.

The ministry considers this a matter of great concern and finds it necessary to provide an explanation to the nation regarding this challenge that affects the girl child.

To solve this problem, the Minister instructed the Permanent Secretary to investigate the matter and come up with a detailed report that will help the ministry find solutions to the loophole.

She further hinted at student absenteeism that she says has been on a rise with at least 0.3% of candidates who registered for UCE not turning up to sit for the exams.

“We have instructed the PS to conduct a study in this area so that we may understand the issues at hand and authoritatively inform the nation.” Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni revealed.
