Minister’s Driver Pinned For Damaging Student’s Property

Minister's car at the school premises
The office of the Prime Minister has ordered a yet to be identified driver to a minister of state to report to the police following accusations of damaging a student’s property at Budo Secondary School.
The notice came shortly after an alarm was raised on social media with the picture of the car registration UG-0915Z accusing the driver of knocking over a student’s suitcase and driving off. The vehicle was traced to the state minister in charge of Bunyoro Affairs, Hon. Jennifer Namuyangu who was called out by netizens to return to the school and pay for damages caused.
Following the uproar on social media, the Permanent Secretary, Keith Muhakizi in the office of the Prime Minister released an official statement addressing the ‘unfortunate’ event and also calling upon the driver to report to the acting director of the traffic police.
“We wish to assure the general public that the Office of the Prime Minister does not condone indiscipline and therefore, the driver has been directed to account for his actions and based on his response appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken immediately. Further, we have asked the Traffic Police to commence investigations and arraign the affected diver in Courts of Law,” read part of the statement.
But a legal assistant who claimed to have spoken to the driver accounted for the events that day stating that it happened as he was reversing because the student had placed the suitcase right in front of the car. He says the driver tried to take responsibility by identifying the student in vain.
“The teacher advised the driver that the damage would only cost 10K and someone at school would do it. The driver gave the money to the teacher and left.” He stated.
Over time, government vehicles have been accused of recklessness on the road and disobeying traffic rules. This sometimes resulting in accidents and damages.
