UCCA Clarifies On Banning Ugandans From Taking PICTURES At Entebbe Airport

The notice that was put up by management at Entebbe Airport

The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCCA) has clarified on the notice that was put up at the Entebbe International airport banning airport users from taking photos or filming in the departure terminal.

A couple of days back, a photo was shared on social media of the notice signed by the management, reading ‘CAPTURING OF VIDEOS AND TAKING PHOTOS IS PROHIBITED’. Disgruntled Ugandans flooded social media pinning CAA for promoting misconduct by staff.

Explaining the notice, CAA released an official statement, noting that the notice was a reminder to the law that was already in existence and was only restricted to operational and sensitive areas.

“This is to clarify that the reminder message restricting photography and filming relates to only operational restricted/ sensitive areas within the terminal building (such as security screening areas and equipment, among other sensitive areas,”

“Even journalists who access the terminal building for official coverage go through a formal clearance process before taking photos and videos of specific areas/activities. Recently, some people have adopted a practice of filming the security screening process and equipment.”

The management further explains how they are committed to implementing measures for a better passenger experience and are not willing to compromise airport security and safety. They make it clear that selfies and other memorable video moments may be undertaken in the pre-boarding and duty free area after the last security check.

Recently UCAA was rocked with reports about corruption, bribery and extortion with a number of travelers sharing videos of airport officials that they claim sabotaged their travel plans. As a result, Gen. Katumba Wamala, the minister of Works and Transport announced an investigation into the matter.

This was followed by transfers, laying and arrests of some airport staff that were involved in the dubious acts.

Among the new measures to curb, airport staff are  required to wear name tags for identification. The sign post also provides numbers for the public to call in cases of bribery and extortion.
