Musa Hasahya Kasera is opting for family planning after having 102 children because he is struggling to manage and provide for this big family.

Aged 68 years old, Hasahya at his home village Bugisa, Butaleja District has 12 wives, 102 children and 578 grandchildren. At his old age, he says the family is too big for him to keep up with the names and wellbeing of both his wives and children.

“I lost four children and I’m left with 98 children…My fellow parents, the problem I have with these 102 children is that I can only remember the first child and the last one. But I cannot remember all the names of some of the other children in the middle.” Musa said, opening up a book with all his children’s names and dates of birth.

Musa, being unemployed, is now struggling to provide for his children in terms of school fees, clothing, medical bills and food.

“I don’t have land. I have only two hectares that my father left me and in this small land is where I have produced all these children from. It has become a very big problem in taking care of them” Musa told AFP.

Having been faced with all these challenges, he opted for family planning for all his wives to stop the number of children in his compound from going up.

“When I saw the number of children was too much, we decided to put all my wives on family planning so as not to increase the number.” He said.

In a video captured by AFP, Mzee Musa is seen calling upon his children who later sit around him to share a meal of boiled cassava which is barely enough. He says they are forced to feed on one meal or two on a good day.

Musa has become the talk of the town with most people visiting his home to witness the huge family. His youngest wife is 35 years old and children range from ages 10 to 50 years. Because of the overcrowded home, two of his wives left him and another three opted to stay in other towns. He is one of the many Ugandans who are embracing the culture of polygamy that is allowed in certain religious traditions.
