Sponsor Demos to Protest Paying Taxes, But You Must Pay, Ruto Says

President William Ruto has sounded a warning signal to tax evaders, claiming that the current war of words between him and former Premier Raila Odinga, with sharp criticism of his government, could be sponsored by powerful individuals who are not used to paying tax.

“We can continue to operate in a space where those in power exempt themselves from paying taxes using all manner of instruments. While those who do not have as much power pay taxes. All I am saying is that the good people who are used to exempting themselves from paying taxes, their day is up; every citizen must pay tax,” Ruto said.

During Sunday’s Jacaranda Ground Rally by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, Raila Odinga hit out at Ruto saying that the Kenya Kwanza Government has introduced punitive taxation guidelines without approval by the National Assembly.

“We ask that all Kenyans demand the removal of these punitive taxes,” Odinga said. “There will be no taxation without representation,” he added.

President Ruto has reiterated that every citizen will pay tax with no exemptions.

“That is all I am saying. It does not matter, even if they sponsor demonstrations so that they don’t pay tax, I want to promise them, they will pay tax.  No more exemptions,” said Ruto.

“This country is not the animal farm where some animals are more equal than others. We are going to have a society where every citizen carries a fair share of our burden to raise our taxes,” he added.
