Home » Schools In Mombasa Turned Into Maternity, Jomvu MP Cries

Jomvu MP Badi Twalib has urged security agencies and the judiciary to take stern action against perpetrators of teenage pregnancies, who have made schools look like maternities, saying they deserve lifetime jail terms.

“Some schools have been turned into maternity with every term girls getting impregnated. We cannot allow this, we need action and quick intervention.  The situation is bad. There’s a school where every term three girls are impregnated,” he said.

Mr Twalib said after they are impregnated, the parents of the minor always settle the matter through what is commonly termed as kajama, whereby the culprit pays the parents some money for impregnating the minors.

Sometimes the victims are married off after the kajama is paid and in other instances, they pay the penalty and the girl is forced to drop out of school.

“I will not allow kajama in my constituency, all girls must be in school. We must ensure 100 percent transition. Those impregnating minors should be arrested and charged in court” he added.

The MP further sounded a warning to education stakeholders over the recent dismal performance of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education where Mombasa tailed hundreds of E’s with most schools becoming maternity instead of education institutions.

The third-term MP now wants Education Cabinet secretary Ezekiel Machogu to come to the rescue regarding the region’s education performance.

The MP promised to give all Form Ones from poverty-stricken families Sh53,000 bursaries from the NG-CDF. He further decried drug abuse among monitors.

Mr Twalib said he will ensure all the 1.2 million Grade 7 learners report to school on Monday.
