Home » Government To Reduce NHIF Monthly Subscription

Cabinet Secretary for Health Susan Nakhumicha addresses a gathering in Runyenjes, Embu County during the launch of the National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month on 27th January 2023.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has said the government is in the final stages of reviewing the monthly premiums for the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in order for the state to attend to all Kenyans’ health needs.

The CS said that the new premiums will be much lower than the current Sh. 500 premium, making it easier for every Kenyan to enroll in the medical insurance scheme.

Speaking on Friday While rallying Kenyans to enroll for the medical cover during the launch of National Cervical Cancer Awareness Month at Runyenjes Stadium in Embu County, the CS said the reviewing of NHIF premiums is part of the new reforms that the government plans to institute in the medical scheme in order to ensure that all Kenyans are able to pay the monthly premiums.

“The charges could be as low as Sh160 per month. It is important that the amount contributed to NHIF be reduced so that Kenyans who are financially weak can benefit,” the CS said.

Nakhumicha adds that the reforms are part of the government’s strategy to ensure that it achieves universal health coverage.

Running up to the August 9, 2022 general elections, the Kenya Kwanza Coalition campaigned for President William Ruto, who promised to lower the minimum NHIF contributions from Sh500 to Sh300.
