Following a high rise of fraudsters masquerading as accredited journalists, Media Council of Kenya CEO has issued a press release in Nairobi to curb fraudsters.

Mr. Omwoyo while speaking to media stakeholders, has said soon MCK will recall all accreditation cards to contain fraudsters posing as journalists.

Additionally, he has said, new press cards will be issued which will have additional features including barcodes and QR code that can be scanned using any smartphone to weed out the fake.

” We will soon issue a notice to recall all MCK cards in the market and issue new ones with new features that have QR and bar codes among other measures” says Mr. Omwoyo.

Further, the MCK CEO has said they will work closely with DCI to arrest fake card printers and all freelance journalists will be affiliated to a media house or institutions they freelance for as the new card will bear the media house one works for.

To hotels, he has said MCK will work closely with them and install gadgets at the entrances, which will distinguish between fake and original journalists.

“We will work with hotels to install gadgets at entrances to distinguish fake and genuine cards” he adds.

To journalists, he has noted that any journalist will have to leave the MCK card where they have been working in a scenario where they leave their work station.
