Mandera Governor Introduces 100% Free Secondary School Education

Mandera County CEO has made history in Kenya’s devolved government after introducing 100% free public secondary education.
Speaking at Rhamu, Mandera North Sub- County on the launch of bursary 2022/2023, Governor Mohamed Adan said his government is aimed at improving the education sector in his county.
“Launching the ELIMU KWA WOTE initiative in Mandera North Sub-County is, therefore, deliberate and a pointer to the direction my administration will be taking” the governor said
Mandera County which for a long while has been affected by drought and famine, education has been inaccessible by most students from humble background.
This has made many not finish school and rather drop out because of fees sourced from livestock, which many die of the famine.
The Elimu kwa Wote which will provide 100% free education, the initiate will benefit over 22,000 students in Mandera County.
” This initiative will benefit over 22,000 students in our county and provide relief for thousands of families struggling due to poverty and the impact of the prolonged drought.” The Governor said.

The launch bursary KES 350 million, will primarily cover secondary school fees for all students in the 59 government schools in Mandera County.
“Today’s event marks the official launch of the 2022/2023 Mandera County Bursary Fund of Ksh 350,000,000. The bursary fund will primarily cover secondary school fees for all students in the 59 government secondary schools in Mandera County.
Additionally, the Elimu Kwa Wote initiative will not only benefit students in public secondary schools within Mandera County, but will include those in public colleges and universities who are bonafide Manderans.
” The beneficiaries will include students in government secondary schools, public colleges and universities. This support will complement the NG-CDF bursary schemes” He added.
The initiative which will significantly reduce the burdens on parents and provide necessary resources to schools, on the other hand, girl’s needs will get catered for.
” My government will continue to support the girls’ affirmative action program started in 2019 by the previous administration.
“The Elimu Kwa Wote initiative will ensure that the 11 girls at Uskudar university in Turkey complete their studies successfully and return home to contribute to the development of their home county and country, ” Hon. Adan said.

Concerning management and funds utilization, he urged school administrators to work closely with his government and ensure no student is sent home for school fees.
“I urge the school management to utilize the funds properly and ensure that no student is sent home for school fees.” The governor urged.
Further, because of hunger terrain, he said his government has allocated money to the school meals program, in the supplementary budget.
” We have allocated KES 79 million to the school meals program in the supplementary budget, and we shall launch this program as soon as the schools open.The feeding program will reduce hunger and malnutrition and therefore improve education outcomes.” He summed.
