“Humble Beginning?”: King’ang’i Reacts to Maina Kageni’s Salary, Ksh.42K In 1993

King'ang'i (L) revealed that in 1993, Ksh 42K could buy an acre of land in Kitengela, Kajiado County/ courtesy.
Mwalimu King’ang’i expressed his shock over Maina Kageni’s first salary in 1993. Maina revealed in a quickfire session with Kalondu Musyimi that his first salary was Ksh 42K in 1993.
He explained that he used to work at a credit company which belonged to his uncle, SK Macharia, after his High School and paid Ksh 42K as his weekly salary while in the UK, London.
“I used to deal with receipts in a credit card company called Royal Card. It belonged to SK Macharia, my uncle. At the time, I think I was on Sh42k or something, but I had a company car.” Kageni revealed.

However, King’ang’i claimed a person who earned Ksh. 42K in 1993, especially Maina Kageni, can’t claim to have had a humble beginning. He claimed back then, Ksh 42K could buy an acre of land in Kitengela, Kajiado.
“Kuna challenge ulifanya na Kalondu na ukasema ulianza mshahara humble beginning na Ksh 42K, in 1993. Wewe unajua ume-hurt watu wangapi? Humble beginnings in 1993? Hiyo ni acre in Kitengela back then. Do you know even now, Ksh 42,000 is still a miracle?” King’ang’i reacted.
Maina replied, explaining that the standard of living when he earned Ksh 42K was high and that the money wasn’t much to cater for his needs. “I used to get paid weekly while abroad, but don’t forget the cost of living was very high. Go and live in London and you’ll see. “

Maina went ahead and revealed that his father also used to give them Ksh 100 as their weekly allowance to teach them how to save money. In contrast to King’ang’i, his father never gave them a weekly allowance.
“Hakuna pesa niliwahipewa na mzazi as weekly allowance. Sijawahi ona baba yangu akiwa na pesa. I don’t even know how we survived. Sikuwahi ona akitoa pesa hata akahesabu in front of us. Alikuwa anahesabia kwa mfuko na kutoa cash. “ Hilarious King’ang’i said, hinting that Maina has yet to taste financial brokenness.
