Prof. Wole Soyinka Says He’s An Atheist, Neither Prefers Christianity Nor Islam
In the same interview, he revealed that wine makes him write and read more literature materials/ collage.
Award-winning linguist Prof. Wole Soyinka has said he doesn’t believe in Christianity or Islam. In an exclusive with Larry Madowo, he said he believes in traditional worship.
The noble laureate added that he doesn’t prefer Christianity or Islamic religion because of what they are rooted in.
In his statement, Prof. Wole Soyinka said traditional worship doesn’t support violence and is full of creativity compared to the Western religion.

“I don’t believe in the Islamic or Christian God and for the adherents of these religions if that makes me an atheist, so I say, I am an atheist. I insisted that all human beings have a certain spiritual core in their being, I believe myself to be a more spirit-sensitive person.” He told Larry Madowo.
Prof. Wole Soyinka added that he believes in a spirit called Orisa because he was brought up knowing its existence by his parents and grandparents.
“Orisa is open and very ecumenical and that is why these foreign religions were able to penetrate it and even distort the truth. Because of the generosity of this spirit, it is not violent. It is one of those African religions which eschew violence,” he clarified.

In the same interview, he revealed that wine makes him write and read more literature materials.“Water just takes up space. It belongs to other commodities. ..I’m not keen on water. I avoid water as much as possible.
“A good robust wine either sends you to sleep or inspires you to work. You never know which way it’ll take,” he stated.
