Since the Scottish man departed the club at the end of the 2012/13 season, where they have been managed by 6 different coaches including David Moyes who inherited Alex Ferguson bags before he was sacked a year later, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick also managed the club and now Dutchman Erik ten Hag.

During that period of over one decade since Fergie’s departure, Manchester United have suffered one of the worst defeats in club’s history. In this article, we will look at 6 heaviest defeats Manchester United have received in the hands of rivals.

6. Brentford 4-0 Manchester United

Manchester United a travelled to Gtech Community Stadium in the second match of 2022/23 season after a disappointing 2-1 opener defeat into the new season against Brighton Albion at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag’s second match as United manager in the Premier League was a massive defeat as they received a 4-0 defeat from the Bees. Josh Dasilva opened the scoring after 10 minutes, with Mathias Jensen made it 2-0, eight minutes later. Former Burnley Centre-Back Ben Mee added third goal just 15 minutes after the break, before Cameroonian international Bryan Mbeumo sealed their resounding win after scoring the fourth goal.

5. Brighton Albion 4-o Manchester United

The 2021/22 season was one of the worst seasons ever by the Old Trafford based club where they finished at position 6 with only 58 points. After firing the club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, they brought in Ralf Rangnick as caretaker manager where United suffered a 4-0 defeat against the Seagulls at American Express stadium.

4. Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United

Manchester United under the management of Portuguese manager and also former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho suffered one of the heaviest defeats by a rival club. In October 2016, United received a 4-0 loss at Stamford marking one of the heaviest defeats at the stadium since 1999. Goals from Pedro, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and Ng’olo Kante were enough to seal their resounding win against their rivals.

3. Manchester United 0-5 Liverpool

One of the unforgettable defeats United have ever suffered at Old Trafford came against their longtime rivals Liverpool under the management of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. The ‘Egyptian King’ Mohamed Salah went home with a match ball after scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 win with Guinea international Naby Keita and Diogo Jota scoring the rest.

2. Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur

On 4th October 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic when fans were not allowed to show up for the matches to curb the spread of Corona virus. Manchester United were handed one of the heaviest defeats at Old Trafford by Jose Mourinho side when he coached the London based club before getting fired. They had taken an early lead in the game through Bruno Fernandes penalty conversion before Spurs staged a comeback to beat the Red Devils 6-1 at home. Goals from Harry Kane’s brace, Heung-min Son brace, Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier were enough to seal their biggest win ever against the Old Trafford based club.

1. Liverpool 7-0 Manchester United

It’s now one year since the historical defeat United received under the hands of Jurgen Klopp boys, which is one of the most devastating defeats for Manchester United since Ferguson’s left the club, at Anfield on March 5th, 2023. Despite the Reds not having the best season, they managed to thrash Erik ten Hag side a resounding 7-0 defeat. Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez scored a brace each while Roberto Firmino came off the bench to score the seventh goal of the game.
