Athletics Kenya Reveals How They Plan To Help Olympics Marathon Team Deal With Kelvin Kiptum’s Death

The Athletics Kenya (AK) body through their president Lt. Gen. Jackson Tuwei has revealed its plans on Kenya’s Olympic Marathon team that will be representing the country during the Paris 2024 Olympics scheduled to take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024 in France, with Paris as the main host city.

Athletics Kenya plans to have a sit down with the team ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics to help them overcome the shock and grief of losing their colleague late Kelvin Kiptum who passed away through road accident.

Late Kiptum was named in Kenya’s provisional Olympic marathon team alongside Eliud Kipchoge, Vincent Ngetich who finished second at the 2023 Berlin Marathon, Bernard Koech, two-time New York Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor, Cyprian Kotut, 2022 London Marathon winner Amos Kipruto and Titus Kipruto. Timothy Kiplagat and former Chicago and Boston Marathon champion Benson Kipruto.

In the women’s marathon team had the Paris marathon defending champion Peres Jepchirchir, former world record holder Brigid Kosgei, 2023 New York Marathon champion Hellen Obiri, Tokyo Marathon champion Rosemary Wanjiru, former world winner Marathon Ruth Chepng’etich, former world half marathon record holder Joyciline Jepkosgei, Sharon Lokedi, Judith Jeptum Korir, Selly Chepyego and Sheila Chepkirui.

With the final not yet named fallen Kelvin Kiptum was definitely to be included in the 2024 Paris marathon and following his sudden death it has to affect the psychology of the team set to represent the country. Thus, the Athletics Kenya wants to ensure those who will represent the country are in the right state of mind by offering a special counselling session to each marathoner.

Speaking to NTV the AK president Jackson Tuwei said, “What we need to do, and we have already started doing is to bring the athletes together, particularly those who are going to run the marathon,” “Because we had already selected the team, we need to bring them together to advise them and tell them to be courageous, to run together and boldly. “If we have to remember and honour Kiptum, the best thing they can do is to run and win.”
