Artists Boo Ezekiel Mutua Promise To Pay Them Peanuts Despite MCSK Making Millions
Music and Copyright Society of Kenya(MCSK) CEO Ezekiel Mutua has irked artists once more after announcing plans to release their pay on January 25th, 2024. This is contrary to the expected jubilation that should come with the information.
Speaking to journalists today, Ezekiel Mutua assured Musicians that they will receive their stipends on the aforementioned date after months of trying to work closely with the Government through the Kenya Copyrights Board. The 16,000 artists who are registered under MCSK will receive Ksh. 20M collected by MCSK.
“From 25th they will see the result of the collaboration between the Government and MCSK. We have talked to TikTok and YouTube and most of the cash we’ll be paying is from the digital platforms”

In his dream to make artists one of the richest personalities, Mutua further added that they have introduced hotel and bar rates to ensure artists gain what they deserve from their music played in such areas.
“Ukienda kwa hoteli iko na muziki, unalipa mandazi na chai pamoja na muziki. Hii itahakikisha wanamuziki wetu watakuwa part ya watu matajiri nchini”

His ‘good’ news has not however been positively received by Musicians and Kenyans who feel that is a mere peanut to artists. Section of Kenyans have done a general calculation of dividing the amount to the number artists to arrive at an average of Ksh. 1250 to each artist.
Nonini on the other hand has expressed his remorse to fellow artists on a post on X saying; “Sad Sana poleni wasanii wenzangu”
This is not the first time MCSK is experiencing visible wrangles with artists. In 2019, Khaligraph Jones, Fena among others fumed at MSCK over what they termed as low pay. Similar case happened in April 2023 where Oga Obinna received only Ksh 258 as Royalty for his music.
