Government Moves To Ban Artists From Mixing Music With Politics

The government of Uganda has announced that artists should refrain from politics to curb the increase of violence.The Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Rubaga Division, Anderson Burora, announced strict rules to be put in place to curb violence brought about by politics in music.
In his speech at the media center, he highlighted that one of the challenges they have experienced in this are artists that use their music as tools to fight those with different political beliefs. This has divided the fans, also bringing about chaos and violence in concerts.
Speaking on behalf of other artists, Uganda artist, Pius Mayanja alias Pallaso, bashed the RCC’s claims as he believes every citizen has a right to identify with the political party he wants.
He however advised Government authorities to beef up security during concerts instead of silencing artists who choose to associate with politics.
“There is no problem. Politics is part of our nation and we use music as a voice. If a country is democratic like they say, then they should let us use music to express our opinions, Unless they are cowards, they have many other things they can do like beefing up security in concerts. That’s their job But they can’t control how we express ourselves,” Pallaso said.
For a couple of years now, there has been a plot to boycott a section of artists, who music lovers claim were paid millions of taxpayers’ money to endorse the ruling government. Artists like Bebe Cool, Catherine Kusasira, Bigeye among others have faced the wrath of fans who have had them cancel their performances midway.
