Home » Victor Wanyama: Sir Alex Ferguson Retirement Highly Cost Me

Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Mugubi Wanyama believes Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement cost him a chance to join Manchester United, a team he grew up supporting as a child.

In 2013, while playing at Scottish Premier League at Celtic club, Victor Wanyama was scouted by the legendary Scottish tactician Sir Alex Ferguson who chose to retire in the same year, ending the midfielder’s hope of playing for Manchester United.

In an interview with Radio 47 Wanyama said;

When I was at Celtic, I remember a breakthrough moment during a Champions League match against Barcelona.”

“Sir Alex Ferguson came to watch that game. Afterward, the club president told me that Ferguson had come to watch me because I was also performing well in the league (Scotland Premier League)”

“Although we didn’t have a conversation, he did meet with the club president, who later informed me that they had talked with Fergie about the possibility of me joining Manchester United.”

“However, I’m not sure what ultimately happened, as that was the year when Ferguson announced his retirement.”

Later on, Wanyama was signed by Southampton from Celtic where he got again signed by London based club Tottenham all in English Premier League before moving to Canada.

In his first meet up against Manchester United as Spurs player at Old Trafford, he headed one of the best goals in his career.

Wanyama also scored a rocket against Liverpool, one of the greatest goals in English Premier League history.
