Lodging Catches Fire, Occupants Rush Through Windows Half Naked
A huge cloud of smoke covered Kampala City yesterday following the fires that gutted City House at Luwum Street. The fires engulfed two lower floors of the building located in the middle of the city.
A lot of things happened amidst the chaos; from traders trying to rescue their merchandise from the fires to bare chested men and half dressed women climbing down the building through the high windows to save their lives from the fierce fire that was spreading very fast.
Unlike other arcades around the city, this particular street below City House is a known spot for sex workers who parade at night and often drag their clients upstairs for lodging.

The Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services did a commendable job in helping these victims who are said to have been sleeping in these lodges at the time when the fires started at around 9am.
One of the survivors who hoped out in a towel claimed to have been staying in the building with his kids when the unfortunate incident happened.
“When I was in the bathroom, I heard people screaming, then I opened the door only to see smoke. I picked my children and fled with them outside. That is why I am dressed like this,” he said.

His story was however disputed by boda boda riders nearby. They claimed he was a regular customer of the sex workers that parade in the corridors of the burned building.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the death of one person in the building and revealed that their team was still searching for other victims.
