Pastors, 8 Soldiers Charged Over Plot To Overthrow The Government

31 suspects including 8 UPDF soldiers under the Armoured Brigade Headquarters were charged over allegations of overthrowing the government.

 

According to prosecution led by Lt Col Raphael Mugisha and Lt Alex Mukwana in a session held yesterday evening; the accused among them a teacher, masons and three pastors were involved in treachery and unlawful possession of firearms around Kampala and five other regions around the country.

 

The prosecution further alleged that the suspects  between February 2022 and October 2023 ‘held meetings, recruited and formed a rebel group called Uganda Lord’s Salvation Army and engaged in war or war like activities intending to overthrow the Ugandan government’.

The accused denied the charges before Brigadier Robert Mugabe Freeman who chaired the General Court Martial. The soldiers were remanded at Makindye Military Prison and Civilians taken to Kigo Prison until 22nd January, 2024 where they will be arraigned to court to answer charges against them.

 

Under section 16 of the UPDF Act, treachery is an offense involving infiltration on behalf of foreign entities, solicitation and unauthorized sharing of military information and or withdrawing of vital security information from proper authorities is punishable by death.
