World and Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon broke the record for the women’s 1500m after she clocked a time of 3:49.

She beat the previous mark established by Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia in 2015 by 0.96 seconds. 2015 Monaco winner Dibaba finished in 3:50.07. When Kipyegon won the 2022 Monaco Diamond League leg in a time that set a new national record of 3:50.37, she came very close to breaking the global record.

Australia’s Jessica Hull finished third in a time that set both a national and local record, while Britain’s Laura Muir came in second in 3:57.09 overall.

Speaking after breaking the record, Faith Kipyegon said she still hopes she can run faster. “There’s still more to come. I’m still working on running faster than that—faster than 3:49. I managed to run 3:49, and I’m still heading towards beautiful races in the rest of the season,” she said.

She has since received congratulations from all over the sporting world, especially in Kenya, after the amazing victory.
